Autumn Storm

— Laura Ann Reed

In the rain, the lake is not one thing.

The limbs of the lindens on the shore lean

sideways to the north. Yellow leaves

float over and under each other

in the shallows. Below them are stones

that lose their colors when the sky darkens.

In places, the water is black with the angles

of waves. Elsewhere, it is white, with no

direction on the surface. Above is the edgeless

air where the wing-spread of a single gull

is like a piece of the wet sky moving.
