‘Glass Half Full’ by Kathleen Nalley

— Reneé Bibby

I returned to Nalley’s poem again and again over the past few weeks. It drew me in first as a salutation of the scientific: a hallelujah to a rebalancing of ecology, a landscape burgeoning, realigning, and resettling into health—a reason to celebrate the ways the world can be repaired. Yet, it held me over the weeks because the poem’s scope is socially relevant now, urging us to look past the surface to the great deep good underneath. To understand how seemingly small darkness can spark great things. To see that the thing we fear may be the very thing we need to invite in.
