‘The Widow and the Wave’ by MJ Cunniff

— Reneé Bibby

The red of February prompted me to seek out works about love for the Wilds. I didn’t want the tenderness of sparkling first-love or the parsed analysis of modern romances—no, ever the curmudgeon, I wanted the long, drawn out note of heartbreak. MJ Cunniff delivered in the poem ‘The Window and the Wave.’ It’s tangled in the brambles of myth. The poem is a dark wave churning the ancient myth of the selkie into a modern meditation of grief; the timeless, and always true sadness of what it means to lose the one the we love most. Perfect for this week dedicated to all the variegates of love.
